Antique Grandfather Clock
by 'Robert Austen Challock
A black lacquer chinioserie decorated longcase clock
signed on a cartouche 'Robert Austen Challock' and
numbered 111. The arched brass dial has subs:diary
seconds dial and date aperture silvereed chaptere
ring and cartouche. The eight day five pillar movement
has an anchor escapement and bell striking.
Robert Austen 1730; died 1793
"In 'Kent Clocks and Clockmakers' Michael Pearson
states that Baillie noted a longcase clock by R. Austen
in the Virginia Museum, Richmond, USA.
Rober Austen may have been related to the Austen
family at nearby Godmesham Park and the owner, Edward
Austen, was Jane Austen's brother and some of her
novels were written at Godmesham though the family
connection not yet proven."
